Capturing First Birthday Memories: A Lifestyle Photoshoot with Sarah and Family | South NJ Milestone Photography
In late April 2025, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sarah and her lovely family into our studio for a first birthday session.
First birthdays hold a special significance, and we’re always thrilled to capture this important milestone for families! Sarah envisioned a lifestyle-type photoshoot that truly highlighted her family’s dynamics. The classic choice of denim jeans and white tops created a timeless look for their session, and their baby boy looked absolutely adorable in his tiny jeans.

In addition to solo portraits of their baby boy, we made sure to capture plenty of family photos, including some with their teenage daughter. Sibling photos are always a family favorite, and we love documenting the unique bond between siblings as it evolves over the years. To start the session, we utilized a neutral backdrop. Typically, we begin first birthday sessions in this area to help toddlers familiarize themselves with the studio and feel more comfortable. We understand that new environments can sometimes be overwhelming, but we strive to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where toddlers can adjust to the space and sound at their own pace.

Did you know that using a neutral backdrop can help to evenly distribute light, ensuring consistent exposure across all subjects? This technique, combined with soft, diffused lighting, minimizes harsh shadows and creates a flattering, natural look.
We started with some adorable family photos, where their son was held between mom and dad, facing away from them. He also sported a backwards hat that perfectly complemented his outfit. We go above and beyond to capture the attention of toddlers and encourage them to look at the camera. Jackie, our expert photographer, has a knack for using silly sounds, favorite toys, or props to elicit those precious smiles. This is where the ‘golden ratio’ in photography comes into play – framing the subject slightly off-center can create a more visually appealing and balanced composition.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a first birthday session without a custom cake smash set! Sarah chose a white and black balloon garland with black lightning bolts as the backdrop, and we provided a super cute mini white cake for the special occasion. We partner with a local bakery for most of our first birthday sessions, but you’re always welcome to bring your own cake!

When photographing cake smashes, we often use a wide aperture (like f/2.8) to create a shallow depth of field, which blurs the background and makes the baby the main focus. As you can see, the mini cake was a huge hit! Their baby boy had a blast devouring his birthday cake, and we were able to capture beautiful moments of excitement and joy. Capturing genuine smiles is what we love to do, and we’re so grateful to have been a part of Sarah’s parenthood journey.

In conclusion, Sarah’s first birthday session was a delightful experience filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable moments. From the classic family portraits to the joyous cake smash, we were honored to capture these precious memories for Sarah and her family.
