Every Spring we are excited to hold a special mini-session event for our clients’ children to celebrate their first holy communion. Commemorate this special time with a mini session at our studio and choose from our two backdrops available for this event. We have a cherry blossom backdrop, or for a more simple look, our white set. Be sure to follow us on all socials to keep up with our mini-session events. We are already looking forward to our next communion event which will be in March 2025.

What is a Holy Communion?

Holy Communion, also known as the Eucharist, is one of the seven sacraments in the Catholic Church. It is a ritual that commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples. During this meal, Jesus broke bread and shared wine, instructing his disciples to do this in remembrance of him. This event is documented in the New Testament of the Bible, and it forms the basis for the practice of Holy Communion in Christian tradition.

The term “communion” itself signifies the act of sharing or holding something in common. In the context of Holy Communion, it represents the sharing of the body and blood of Christ among the congregation. The bread and wine used in the ceremony are believed to be transformed into the actual body and blood of Christ through a process called transubstantiation. This belief underscores the deep spiritual significance of the sacrament for Catholics.

Holy Communion is typically first received by children around the age of seven or eight, a milestone known as the First Holy Communion. This age is chosen because it is believed to be the age of reason, which is when a child is capable of understanding the significance of the sacrament. Preparations for First Holy Communion usually involve religious education classes where children learn about the teachings of the Church, the meaning of the Eucharist, and the importance of this sacrament in their spiritual lives.

The ceremony of the First Holy Communion is a joyous and solemn occasion. It usually takes place during a special mass, where the children dress in white to symbolize purity. The mass includes readings from the Bible, prayers, hymns, and the consecration of the bread and wine. The highlight of the ceremony is when the children receive the Eucharist for the first time, marking their full participation in the sacramental life of the Church.

Holy Communion is not just a one-time event but a lifelong practice for Catholics. Regular participation in the Eucharist is encouraged as it is considered a means of receiving grace, spiritual nourishment, and maintaining a close relationship with Jesus Christ. The act of receiving Communion is also a reminder of the sacrifice of Christ and a call to live a life of love, service, and unity with others.

The reasons for practicing Holy Communion are deeply rooted in theology and tradition. Firstly, it is an act of obedience to the command of Jesus Christ, who instructed his followers to “do this in remembrance of me.” Secondly, it is a means of grace, a way through which believers receive spiritual strength and grow in holiness. Thirdly, it fosters a sense of community and unity among the faithful, as they come together to share in the body and blood of Christ.

In summary, Holy Communion is a central sacrament in the Catholic faith that commemorates the Last Supper and signifies the presence of Christ among his followers. It is a practice that begins with the First Holy Communion and continues throughout a Catholic’s life, serving as a source of spiritual nourishment, grace, and unity.
